Teresa Carey is a leading Bay Area mediator and a pioneer in the field.  Drawing on over 20 years' experience as a mediator, arbitrator, and litigator, she is known for her pragmatic, skillful, and humanistic approach to conflict resolution and her outstanding abilities as a professional mediator and trainer.  Ms. Carey is one of the original founders of the Marin County Superior Court ADR program in 1992, the first court-connected mediation program in the State of California.  She is also the founder of Professional Mediation Associates, a network of leading conflict-resolution professionals, and is the former Chair of the Marin County Bar Association, ADR Section.

Since 1980 Ms. Carey has served as a mediator for the U.S. District Court, Northern District; the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, the County Courts of Marin, San Mateo, Alameda, and Contra Costa, the U.S. Postal Service, the Department of Fair Employment & Housing (DFEH), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), California Lawyers for the Arts, Arts Arbitration & Mediation Service (AAMS), the University of California Medical Center (UCSF), corporate and nonprofit organizations.

Ms. Carey designs and gives conflict-resolution training courses for attorneys, business, human resource and real estate professionals, therapists, government personnel, and others interested in learning about this field.  Her work includes her well-known 40-hour Comprehensive Mediation Training program (with 40-hour Certificate of Completion available), several courses at Sonoma State University, and customized trainings for various governmental agencies and private firms.  She has served as an adjunct faculty lecturer and/or conflict-resolution trainer at Stanford University, Hastings Law School, Golden Gate University, John F. Kennedy University, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center, the EEOC, the Marin County Board of Education, and the University of Kent at Canterbury, London Centre for International Relations.

She serves as the current president of the Mediation Society (www.mediationsociety.org) and has been a featured speaker for a variety of educational and professional groups, including the London Centre of International Relations (LCIR), University of Kent, the American Bar Association, the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), the Mediation Society, and the League of U.S. Postal Service Postmasters.

Her publications include "Credentialing for Mediators:  To Be or Not to Be?" Vol. 30, USF Law Review, 1996; "Survey of State Laws Governing Mediation in the United States:  A Review and Reference," 2002; "Talking Mediation in London," 64 ADR-NC Quarterly, 2003; and "Attorneys in Mediation:  For Better and for Worse," Marin Lawyer, 2004.
